The wines of Puglia

 

Puglia has been for millennia a crossroads of cultures and customs, traditions and trade exchanges, which have left a mark on its wine and gastronomic heritage. In recent years, the Puglia region has made great strides in wine production and today boasts an interesting range of products.

The main red grape varieties are: Negroamaro, Primitivo and Uva di Troia but also Montepulciano, Malvasia Nera, Bombino Nero, Aglianico, Aleatico, Susumaniello, Ottavianello, Sangiovese (Tuccanese), Cabernet Sauvignon Sirah, Merlot.

The whites are: Verdeca, Bombino Bianco, Bianco d’Alessano, Malvasia Bianca, Fiano, Minutolo, Chardonnay, Tuscan Trebbiano, Panpanuto, Falanghina, Greco, Moscato di Trani, Sauvignon, Semillon, Vermentino.

 

Particular emphasis should be given to the Rosati di Puglia. The warm climate and the presence of a mediterranean cuisine that is not too structured, favor the demand for rosé wine in Puglia. It was probably the Greek colonists who taught the Salento peasants how to obtain these wines with the tear system, by subjecting the black grapes collected in bags to a delicate pressing, in order to make them tear and collect the must, without keeping it further in contact with the skins. Rosé wines are mainly obtained from vines such as Negroamaro, Uva di Troia, Bombino Nero, Malvasia nera and Primitivo.

 

Worth mentioning is the enormous tradition of Apulian sweet wine and the elegance of many sparkling wines, both in the classic method and Martinotti.
